How Zip-Pak custom zipper technology helped packager cut costs and converter innovate new film product.
Flexible packaging challenge:
Sanitarium, a New Zealand breakfast cereal manufacture, wanted to cut escalating package production costs resulting from excessive film waste and an increase in quality assurance personnel—a necessary expense to prevent defective packages from negatively impacting their brand.
Bottom line… their current in-line zipper applicators and film technology weren’t working. Some zippers weren’t applied in the right location and others weren’t sealing.

Sanitarium turned to a new pre-zippered film made possible by converter AEP Flexipac and a custom 3-flange Zip-Pak zipper solution. The joint project yielded AEP’s Armaloc®, a pre-zippered, non-stretch coextruded polyethylene film—the perfect solution for AEP’s innovative bag-top open (BTO) applications.
Thanks to the reliability of the 3-flange zipper and the non-stretch film, Sanitarium was able cut scrap by 90%! And consumers love the added convenience of an easier, more reliable resealable package.

By working closely with Zip-Pak, we met our goal to provide a more production-friendly solution for Sanitorium. I believe the combination of expertise was essential to the success of this project. Zip-Pak’s custom zipper gave distinct sealing advantages. The 3-flange design was a major breakthrough in technology, allowing us to meet our unique bag-top open specifications. We wouldn’t have this version of Armaloc without it.
